Aquaculture over-optimism?

چکیده
The recent rapid growth in aquaculture production reported by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization may have inadvertently generated what we denote here as over-optimism. An extreme form of this is notion that need not worry about sustaining wild fish stocks because can meet global through farming. Here investigate whether be maintained, compare projections with future for to find out over-optimism justified. We show relevant evidence suggesting rates all cases studied already reached their peak begun declining. Also, our results indicate without fish, world will face a food shortage 71 million tonnes annually 2030, rate would 3 times current average projected FAO, World Bank OECD 2030. Finally, geographical distribution farmed suggests even if physically, economically, technically ecologically feasible, its socio-economic cost low-income coastal countries could devastating.

Over-optimism in bioinformatics research
The problem of ”false research findings” in medical research has focused much attention in the last few years (Ioannidis, 2005). One of the main problems, termed as ”fishing for significance” in the present letter, is that researchers often (consciously or subconsciously) report results that are in fact the product of an intensive optimization, i.e. of multiple comparisons. Such results are typ...
متن کاملOver-optimism in bioinformatics: an illustration
MOTIVATION In statistical bioinformatics research, different optimization mechanisms potentially lead to 'over-optimism' in published papers. So far, however, a systematic critical study concerning the various sources underlying this over-optimism is lacking. RESULTS We present an empirical study on over-optimism using high-dimensional classification as example. Specifically, we consider a 'p...
متن کاملThe Bright Side of Managerial Over-optimism
Human inference and estimation is subject to systematic biases. In particular, there is a long literature showing that overconfidence can lead to sub-optimal decisions. We depart from this research by showing empirically that a) over-optimism is a related but different bias, b) importantly, it can improve firm’s welfare, and more specifically, firms’ profitability and market value, and c) it ca...
متن کاملHope over experience: desirability and the persistence of optimism.
Many important decisions hinge on expectations of future outcomes. Decisions about health, investments, and relationships all depend on predictions of the future. These expectations are often optimistic: People frequently believe that their preferred outcomes are more likely than is merited. Yet it is unclear whether optimism persists with experience and, surprisingly, whether optimism is truly...
متن کاملOver-optimism Among Experts in Assessment and Foresight
It is still disputed whether foresight exercises should be based on top-expert assessments or on a broader base of less specialised experts, and whether the self-rating of experts is an acceptable method. Using the German 1993 and the Austrian 1998 Technology Delphis, this study addresses both questions: Self-rating is in fact an appropriate method for selecting experts. But the assessment of s...
